Polymer banknotes were introduced in 1999. The current designs feature famous
New Zealanders. This was the first major redesign since decimal currency was introduced
in 1967.
Who chooses the designs for New Zealand's coins and bank notes?
The selection of new currency designs is done by committee drawing heavily on public
opinion surveys and expert recommendations. See notes and coins on the main Reserve
Bank website for more information.
