What happens to old or damaged bank notes?

Bank notes no longer fit for circulation are returned to the Reserve Bank and finely shredded in a machine called a granulator. A tube of granulated bank notes is on display in the Museum. Until 1989 old bank notes were incinerated in furnaces located on the roof of the Reserve Bank building.
